Photo Reference Mastery

Developing the Landscape in Watercolour

Most artists find themselves working from photo references at least part of the time, and photos can be a great tool. However, many artists struggle with simply copying what they see in the photo, not knowing quite how to incorporate their own style into the scene while painting the details in the image.

In this course, we'll use two different photos to understand the role of photo references in our painting. I will show you the steps I take to get to know my scene and avoid letting my reference photo control my painting process. We will talk about how to make good decisions as you interpret your photos and how to know when to stop and avoid dreaded "overworking."
