Lesson 1: Circle Exercise/Warm Up
One reason we struggle with overworking a painting intended for looseness is that we focus on the details, rather than creating beauty with foundational shapes. As you create loose circular shapes, dropping in colour, varying the sizes and focusing on creating a pleasing arrangement, remember that many flowers are made of of simple shapes, and often an evocative floral can be created by simply capturing the basic shape and just adding a suggestion of detail.
Exercises like this, while they seem simple, are never a waste of time. Not only are you training your mind to see simple shapes in all painting subjects, but you are additionally refining your brushstrokes, experimenting with colour combinations and creating harmony and rhythm in the placement of your shapes across the page. Just because it's fun doesn't mean you aren't learning; I think the best learning happens when you are enjoying yourself!
